The Dog Days of Summer

Motivation

It’s hot. It’s humid. I don’t know about the rest of the country, but summer has arrived in Indiana. You go outside and feel like you’re getting licked in the face by a yak. July is worse for motivation then February is for new year’s resolutions. Seriously, I worked up a sweat just writing those last few sentences. If I actually got up off the couch, put on my exercise clothes, and walked out the door I just might melt…literally melt from the buckets of sweat pouring from my body. Okay, okay. So maybe I’m overexaggerating, but it is hot.

Yak

The worst part is that time just seems to fly by. All three boys are busy with summer jobs. I’m busy with work and projects at home. Randi is busy creating projects for me to do. We manage to all get together a few times a week to do something as a family. All of a sudden we’re looking at Gavin starting school again in just over three weeks and the other two back to college in five weeks. Wow! Just like that and the summer will be gone. And I’ve not gotten near all the projects done my wife had planned.
Enough of my whining. There’s still plenty of summer left to enjoy so let’s make the most of it.

Stay Active

Don’t let the heat sap you of your energy. Do your outdoor activities early in the morning and late in the evening when temperatures and humidity levels tend to be bearable. Sunset is the most gorgeous time of the day anyway. I’ve been told sunrise is just as beautiful, but honestly I haven’t seen it in a while.

Hydrate

Remember to drink lots of water. I love coffee and soda as much as the next person, but these don’t help keep your body hydrated like water or sports drinks.

Play in the water

One of our favorite ways to cope with the heat while remaining active is to get wet. Whether it’s a day on the lake or standing under a waterfall that you just hiked to, getting wet is a refreshing way to take the burn out of the summer heat.

Refreshing waterfall

Let us know what you guys do to keep cool during the summer, but don’t sweat it.
Have a great summer,
Mike
